Commonwealth Health Scranton Hospitals Announce Nursing Excellence Awards
11/19/2020
Moses Taylor Hospital and Regional Hospital of Scranton announced that Maureen Leggiero, RN and Jessica Nails, RN have been selected to receive their Nursing Excellence Awards.
This peer-nominated award, created in honor of 2020 being the “Year of the Nurse,” and in recognition of the critical role nurses have played in treating patients throughout the COVID pandemic, was open to qualifying RNs and LPNs working in a direct patient care position who consistently demonstrate characteristics synonymous with nursing excellence.
“Moses Taylor Hospital and Regional Hospital are fortunate to have nurses like Maureen and Jessica in our facilities. They are on the front line every day caring for our patients and have demonstrated themselves to be team players and/or mentors to others, leaders in times of crises, and true champions of promoting healthcare in our community, said Michael Brown, CEO. “We are proud to recognize the contributions that Maureen and Jessica have made to the Scranton Hospitals.”
Maureen was chosen for being a calm compassionate caregiver and team player during the COVID pandemic. Her calmness and confidence has helped to allay patient fears and anxiety. Maureen joined Moses Taylor Hospital in July 2000 and in that time has partnered with CHEMS to bring chest pain education to the community. Maureen also helped the emergency room’s success in meeting core measure requirements and in securing the hospital’s chest pain and stroke re-accreditations.
Jessica was chosen for her outstanding contributions to compassionate care. She went above and beyond with a patient’s husband that came to visit every day but one day didn’t show up. Jessica’s critical thinking and nursing instinct helped to have the husband located who was having a medical issue and saved his life. Jessica joined Regional Hospital in June 2010 and in that time has become a Charge Nurse, a resource nurse and mentor to new staff. Jessica was also a 2019 Daisy Award winner.
In addition to receiving the Nursing Excellence Award itself, Maureen and Jessica received a cash prize and the Florence Nightingale’s 1859 quintessential book on nursing, which remains relevant in today’s modern nursing attitudes and skills.
