Cancer Care
Commonwealth Health Cancer Center delivers a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment. All staff members have been specially selected for their ability to teach, nurture and support patients and their families. Diagnostic technology is utilized that may detect cancer at the earliest stages, when it can be treated most effectively.
Patient-centered care is tailored to each individual’s needs, utilizing treatment options such as precisely targeted radiation therapy, brachytherapy and robotic-assisted surgery. Professionals provide ongoing support from the moment you’re diagnosed through follow-up care and beyond.
A multidisciplinary team of oncologists, radiation oncologists, nutritionists, nurse navigators, cancer educators, spiritual care professionals and others are available to address the medical and emotional needs of patients and their loved ones.
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital offers a medical linear accelerator as an option in radiation delivery. It can deliver accurate treatments in a shorter amount of time for many types of cancer like prostate, brain, lung, bladder, breast and skin. These kind of treatments generally:
- Are non-invasive
- Have a shorter treatment time
- Are outpatient procedures
Men with low- or intermediate-risk prostate cancer now have a treatment choice. Stereotactic body radiotherapy is a form of external beam radiation therapy and often reduces the duration of treatment from 45 days to four to five days.
