10/11/2022
Commonwealth Health Wilkes-Barre General Hospital celebrated its 150th anniversary Tuesday as dozens of people, including hospital, community and government leaders, gathered to celebrate the milestone. Founded in 1872, Wilkes-Barre City Hospital was the first hospital in the Wyoming Valley.
The highlight of the event was Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown presenting the hospital the key to the city in recognition of their 150 years of service to the community.
“Together, we honor generations of physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers who came before us, as well as our current healthcare heroes, whose dedication and innovation have built Wilkes-Barre General Hospital into a destination for care”, stated Simon K. Ratliff, CEO of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. “Our hospital has grown over the years and is now complemented by a network of primary care and outpatient specialty service clinics that provide convenient world-class care right in the neighborhoods that our patients call home.”
The hospital’s services have expanded over the decades and now include a Heart & Vascular Institute, Cancer Center, Joint Replacement Center, Bariatric Surgery Center, Center for Advanced Endoscopy, Stroke Center, Chest Pain Center and minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery options.
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and its clinics have been consistently recognized for excellence by national accrediting bodies and respected health care quality agencies, including The Joint Commission, the Society of Chest Pain Centers, Newsweek, the American Heart Association, the American College of Surgeons, the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and the Commission on Cancer to name a few.
Every year, the hospital takes care of thousands of patients and families across Northeastern Pennsylvania. From primary care to more than 60 medical specialties, as well as acute care and walk-in clinics, our commitment to our patients is unwavering.
“We are blessed to have a breadth of talented primary care and specialty physicians practicing locally,” stated Simon K. Ratliff. “They work tirelessly to be available for their patients, and they are committed to serve our community.”
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital also contributes significantly to the economic health of the community - employing thousands of people, paying taxes, and donating to charities. The hospital and its staff are firmly committed to delivering high quality healthcare to patients and to helping local communities grow and prosper.
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital has remained faithful to its mission for 150 years and celebrates that legacy today while looking forward to an even brighter future.
