Cancer Program at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Receives Full Accreditation

6/11/2021

The Commonwealth Health Cancer Center located at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital has achieved full accreditation status with the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer for three years.

To earn voluntary Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation, a cancer program must meet all CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered care.

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer accreditation is an extremely valuable asset to our cancer center as it provides a way to monitor patient care and treatment quality. This accreditation also offers a benchmark to compare ourselves to other accredited cancer centers throughout the nation to ensure that we are providing the highest-quality care to our patients and our communities.

Today, there are more than 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the United States and Puerto Rico. The CoC accreditation encourages hospitals, treatment centers, and other facilities to improve their quality of care through various cancer-related programs and activities. These programs are concerned with the full continuum of cancer—from prevention to survivorship and end-of-life-care—while addressing both survival and quality of life.
