2/13/2018

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Feb. 13, 2018) – Commonwealth Health Wilkes-Barre General Hospital today unveiled its $40 million expansion project to community leaders and employees. The centerpiece of the vertical expansion is a two-story, 34-room intensive care unit and critical care unit which will open for patient care next month.

Cor Catena, CEO of Commonwealth Health and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, welcomed guests and noted how the spacious and modern ICU supports the hospital’s Level II trauma center, Heart & Vascular Institute and neurosurgery, surgery and emergency departments. This expansion project also includes a helipad that will provide easier access to the emergency department and ICU and the renovation of approximately 200 patient rooms in the main hospital and the conversion of most semi-private rooms into private rooms.

Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tony George and State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski commented on the continual advances Commonwealth Health is making in the region and expressed their gratitude that the hospital provides the community with the highest quality health care.

Tours of the new structure were offered and refreshments were served.

A grand opening celebration for the public featuring a health fair, tours, screenings and refreshments will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17.
