Patient Navigation: Breast Cancer Education and Screening, 2014

The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute recently conducted a study on the Patient Navigation program for breast cancer education and screening. The study was conducted in cooperation with NRCI member hospitals, including Commonwealth Health locations Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Regional Hospital of Scranton, Moses Taylor Hospital and Tyler Memorial Hospital.
The study released the following results:
Education
- Over 750 participants in the Navigation Program received one-on-one education about the importance of breast cancer screening by phone
- Over 750 participants in the Navigation Program received written materials and resources for breast cancer screening by mail
- 20 community programs including information about breast cancer screening and resources held with 234 participants
- Staff attended 23 health fairs where breast cancer screening materials were distributed with the potential to reach over 8,000 attendees
- Three healthcare professional programs including breast cancer genetics held with 132 participants
Screening
- 217 participants in the Navigation Program received mammograms
- All participants were connected or re-connected to a medical home
- 25 mammograms were reported as abnormal and required additional diagnostic testing
- 32 diagnostic tests were completed including diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds and biopsies
Treatment
- One patient was diagnosed with breast cancer and received surgery and chemotherapy
- Biopsy results on one patient pending
