Joint Replacement
Advances in medical technology have made joint replacement therapy an effective option to treat chronic joint pain from arthritis and other degenerative joint diseases or injury. The multidisciplinary orthopedic care team at Commonwealth Health includes orthopedic doctors, surgeons, pain management specialists and physical therapists who provide care. We offer orthopedic surgery, including:
- Total joint replacement for knees, hips, elbows and shoulders
- Hip resurfacing
- Minimally invasive options
Part of joint replacement care includes preparing patients properly before surgery, as well as helping them recover their mobility. You’ll know what to expect before, during and after surgery. Orthopedic care professionals are focused on providing quality care from diagnosis through recovery.
The surgeons at Commonwealth Health can offer a minimally invasive option to alleviate knee pain associated with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis. Surgeons perform partial knee resurfacing, a procedure that allows them to resurface the diseased area while sparing the patient’s healthy bone and surrounding tissue. The digital tracking system constantly monitors and updates the patient’s anatomy and allows the surgeon to make real-time adjustments to optimize implant positioning and placement.
Commonwealth Health also offers robotic-assisted total knee replacement. During this procedure, the surgeon collects patient-specific data to build a three-dimensional model of the patient’s knee. A handheld robotic-assisted tool is then used to position the precisely cut guides exactly as intended, based on the patient-specific data that was collected. This extra layer of precision and accuracy is designed to allow optimal implant placement for better patient outcomes. Robotic-assisted surgery typically results in smaller incisions and quicker recovery periods.
Surgeons also provide a minimally invasive option for hip replacement which allows surgeons to prepare the hip socket for a more exact implant alignment, and reduces complications such as excessive wear on the joint, unequal leg length or dislocation.
There are a number of potential benefits over traditional knee replacement techniques, including:
-
Optimal implant positioning that results in a more natural knee motion.
-
Less pain, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery.

STEP 1
Discovery
When it comes to joint replacement, the more informed you are, the better your experience. A few weeks before your surgery, you’ll attend a class, along with a friend or family member to lend additional support. There, you’ll meet members of your care team; learn about your procedure, hospital stay and postoperative care; plan for a smooth transition home; and ask any and all questions to feel confident and prepared.
STEP 2
Surgery
On the big day, your surgeon will make sure you’re comfortable, and review what to expect before, during and immediately after your procedure. Find peace of mind knowing this program has earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hip and Knee Replacement. That means we meet the highest national standards for quality and safety, while providing minimally invasive solutions that can often offer less pain, speedier recovery and a stronger, more functional joint.
STEP 3
Recovery
Finally, you’ll spend a few days recovering in your own private room on the dedicated orthopedic unit. Everyone’s a little different, but on the first day, you’ll work with a physical therapist to get up and moving. The next day, you’ll enjoy continue to work one-on-one to achieve your recovery goals. The day you leave, we’ll answer any last-minute questions - and send you home ready to rediscover the life you love.
