Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Commonwealth Health's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides medical care for infants with special needs. Specially trained neonatal care professionals utilize medical technology to deliver diagnosis and treatment. The NICU is staffed 24 hours a day by neonatologists, neonatal care nurses and respiratory therapists who are focused on the needs of these delicate patients.
The multidisciplinary neonatal care team also includes lactation consultants, social workers and other clinicians who provide educational and emotional support to parents and families. We understand that having a newborn in the hospital can be difficult, so we’re focused on keeping parents well informed. You’ll be part of your baby’s care every step of the way.
Advanced care for newborns
As a Level III NICU, we care for newborns with severe and complex illnesses, with access to a range of pediatric specialists who are on hand to provide care. We specialize in the management of:
-
Severely premature infants
-
Complications of pregnancy, labor and delivery
-
Complex birth defects and genetic syndromes
-
Gastrointestinal, kidney or respiratory disorders
-
Infections or sepsis
-
Major neonatal surgical care
The unit is designed with infants’ needs in mind, including natural lighting, noise reduction materials and private rooms to achieve a low-stress environment for newborns. Our monitoring technology enables clinicians to observe infants, and, because having loved ones nearby is an important part of the healing process, the NICU offers private, comfortable areas for parents to bond with their newborns.
Our goal is to help your baby get well so you can begin your life together as a family. Nurses are on hand to help you learn how to care for your baby with the confidence of having someone close by to answer your questions and assist. We’re committed to delivering compassionate care that satisfies the needs of both newborns and parents.
